Authentic US Army M-1892 Knife Bayonet ~ $350.00
This truly beautiful and authentic Spanish-American War era M-1892 Knife Bayonet is a magnificent fragment of American history. Bayonet and Scabbard Sets in unusually good condition are scarce and difficult to find, which would make this set a rare and valuable addition to any U.S. Martial Arms collection. It features a bright finished steel blade with US & 1899 stamped on the ricasso and the letters “N.J.” stamped on the grip side of the guard. The blade, guard and pommel are clean with no issues beyond some light oxidation in spots on the guard and pommel; no corrosion or pitting in the steel. The muzzle ring is round and true, and the mount/dismount latch, button and spring mechanism works perfectly. The type three steel scabbard and hanger are in very good condition with only a tiny dent towards the tip and they retain most of their original bluing. The walnut wood grips and rivets are solid, crack-free, tight, and in very good condition with minimal surface marring.
A few facts: the M-1892 Bayonet, also known as the Krag Knife Bayonet for its association with the M-1892 Krag Rifle, was the first standard production knife bayonet adopted by the U.S. Army and it was produced at the Springfield Armory beginning in 1894 and continued until 1903. The M-1892 Knife Bayonet replaced a series of rod bayonets and socket style bayonets previously used in the U.S. small arms inventory.
If you would like to research this bayonet and scabbard you can find it described in: "The AMERICAN BAYONET 1776 to 1964" by Albert N. Hardin, Jr.
